The Romans came, saw, conquered then conked out! What with all their walls and forts, towns and ports, aqueducts and roads, the Romans kept themselves very busy after their arrival in Britain in AD43. By the time they left nearly 400 years later, they had crammed in farming and fast food, trades and toilets, concrete and canals, bricks and ballista bolts, central heating and Sundays. They even found leisure time to enjoy the high life and luxuries: villas with mosaic floors, saunas and bath houses, wine and oysters, all topped off with the highest quality glassware, pottery and jewellery. In fact, had it not been for those pesky barbarians that chased them out, we might even be left thinking that they just got tired and bored and went back home to sunny Italy after all.
